This is the Male House Finch
above is a mystery. don't know the name and have only seen it once. i was lucky to get this shot. it flew off and away!
im assuming the other bird is the female house finch. not sure. i see these two together all the time.

Really good pictures. So nice to have birds coming to your feeder. I like the colorful male house finch. I'm sure you're right about the dull one being his mate. Funny how the males have to look nice to attract the females. : )
